Hour Differences
Jamaica falls within the Eastern Time Zone (UTC/GMT -5 Hours) and does NOT observe
Daylight Savings Time.

Climate
In October the temperatures in Jamaica vary between 87° - 76° F (24°-31° C).
It is most likely to rain this time of year.

Travel in Jamaica
Visa Requirements:
No visa is required of persons travelling on passports from Commonwealth countries
other than the following, for which the visa issuing sites are as listed:

 Cameroon - Jamaican High Commission, Abuja, Nigeria 
 Cayman Islands - Jamaican Consulate, Grand Cayman 
 Maldives- British High Commission, Colombo, Sri Lanka

 Nigeria- Jamaican High Commission, Abuja, Nigeria 
 Pakistan- British High Commission, Islamabad, Pakistan 
 Sri Lanka- British High Commission, Colombo, Sri Lanka 
 Zimbabwe- Port of Entry ( Kingston or Montego Bay)

Persons from those Commonwealth countries who are exempted from the visa
requirements are required to:

 Be in possession of a valid passport; 
 Have a return ticket to their country of residence; 
 Be able  to sustain themselves whilst on the Island; and 
 Have accommodation.  

Insurance
It is recommended to acquire an insurance policy in order to protect your luggage and to
cover any accidents or health issues.

Driving
A U.S. or European driver's license is valid in Jamaica for one year, but you must
be 21 to drive. Driving is on the left-hand side of the road with steering wheels on the right.

Taxis in Jamaica are either metered or non-metered. Check with
the driver before starting your trip. It is also possible to hail a taxi
on the street. Either way, a 10% to 15% tip for taxi drivers is
customary. A standard tipping rate of 25% on top of the metered
fee is accustomed when trips taken between midnight and 5:00 a.m.
When taxis are not metered, the price must be negotiated and may
not include tip.

Banks and Currency Exchange
Banks operating hours:
Monday – Thursday, 9:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.
Friday, 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

The unit of currency in Jamaica is the Jamaican Dollar, although commerce can be
done with U.S. Dollars. Money exchange can be done at the airports, hotels, and
commercial banks. When making an exchange, keep all receipts. You must present them
upon departure when reconverting unspent currency.

Most shops and restaurants accept credit cards (VISA, EC/MC, AMEX, and Diners Club).
Bankomats (ATMs) are available at the streets, shopping centers and offices.

Tips
Restaurants
Some restaurants include a 10% to 15% charge in the final bill but others do not.
If the tip is not incorporated in the final bill, a 10% to 20% charge is expected.

Hotels
As with restaurants, some hotels include the charge in the final bill. Otherwise, it is
suggested to tip helpful service employees an adequate amount. Bellhops expect
$1(USD) to $2(USD) per bag, and maids anticipate $1(USD) to $2(USD) per day.

A note: most of the all-inclusive hotels strictly do not permit tipping.
